Kenneth Young is an American Artist whose style ranges from realism to impressionism. Kenneth has seen his notoriety and following increase dramatically in the past year. Well known for his landscape work in realism, Kenneth move to impressionism has garnered him new admirers from both this country and around the world. On this visit to the This American Landscape microphone, Ken discusses his evolution as an artist as well as commenting on the worth of juried art shows. He also discusses a recent article about perceived racism and sexism within the art world and art gallery world. A provocative and surprising answer makes this an intriguing listen.

This American Landscape – Episode 14 – The Grand Slambovians – 2 Hours with Joziah Longo

The Grand Slambovians might be one of the hardest to describe bands on the road today. Their appeal transcends age, gender, and genre. If one had to give them a label, it would be “American Roots Music” with shades of Pink Floyd and King Crimson. And that would only scratch the surface of what this band is all about.

This American Landscape had hoped to get 30 minutes with front man, singer/songwriter Joziah Longo. This interview had been in the work for 9 months due to The Grand Slambovians busy touring schedule both in this country and in Europe. What we got was nearly two hours of the wit, wisdom, philosophy and a look at Longo’s creative muse. From small venues to major festivals like Glastonbury and Falcon Ridge, Longo talks about the music, the performances and the dynamics that make up the experience that is the Grand Slambovians. With critical kudos from All Music calling them “simply the finest band out on the road in America today, to the legendary Garth Hudson’s “Joziah Longo is an awesome songwriter”, the The Grand Slambovians ( AKA Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams) could well become your next favorite band.

This American Landscape – Episode 13 – The Boy from Little Creek

The Boy from Little Creek is Dennis Nesel, a singer/songwriter who for 30 years was a road musician. From honky tonks to large venues, from Nashville to Webster Hall in New York City, Dennis has been on the road entertaining for over 30 years. His most well known incarnation was with his band Little Creek. There are still thousands of loyal fans, and spotting a faded “I’m a Creek Freak” T-shirt is pretty common even today. We talk to Dennis about his career as a road musician, his new musical direction, and we even do some music with your truly pickin’ some guitar along with Dennis on mandolin. A fun program with a superb musician and entertainer, Dennis Nesel, the Boy from Little Creek.

This American Landscape – Episode 11 – The CCCA

The Columbia County Council on the Arts is a 45 year old organization that has promoted the arts and artists in Columbia County. Until now, the CCCA has been primarily associated with the visual arts, but you will learn in our program, they are now reaching out and expanding to include literary and performance art as well.

Like many of organizations of this type, funding is always a challenge. We talk about a new business model that this organization has mobilized and developed to address the large cutbacks in state funding, in a move toward self sufficiency.

SunDogSolar President Jody Rael, and Vice President Betsy Wyman visited This American Landscape to talk about some of the strides and developments happening in solar power. In addition to their work as installers of solar power equipment, SunDog Solar has another vision that is part of their Solaqua Project. Between the two, some amazing things are being done today, and demonstrate the viability of solar power now. Imagine using solar power to melt glass, or metals. Imagine a 100,000 square foot building housing industrial arts and artisans using solar power to power their businesses. It’s a excellent working example of how “green technologies” are creating jobs, and saving people on their energy costs, right now. We think you’ll come away enlightened about the very positive now, and future of solar power.

This American Landscape – Episode 9 – Peter Donahoe

Peter Donahoe is a photographer from Upstate New York. A new York City native, Peter works exclusively in black and white photography. Peter’s work is a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York. Many of those photographs can bee viewed in the book The Night Line, photos from a two year period when Peter drove cab in New York, and photographed the gritter side of New York.

For the past 20 years, Donahoe has worked exclusively in the technique called “pinhole photography”, a technique from the very early days of photography. His work in this area is on display in museums in France, as well as several galleries in New York State.

This week This American Landscape sits down with actor, writer, voice-over artist, and teacher, Dan Region. Dan’s voice is familiar to millions as he was the announcer on the daytime drama, As the World Turns, from 1981 to 1998.

Dan Region has enjoyed a long career doing what he likes best; acting, voiceover work, and writing. A serious actor himself, Dan is also the author of several stage play, author of books and essays. Dan has appeared in TV commercials for Barilla Pasta, Nikon and Lauenbrau. Dan now spends his time on various writing projects and is still a much in demand voice over artist. Of late, Dan has been consumed by the camera and is pursuing photography as a serious medium of expression. An interesting chat, with a very interesting man.
