Singer, performer, and arts activist, Christina Dallea is this week’s guest on This American Landscape. The Columbia Arts Team promotes and showcases performers in and from the Easter Hudson Valley and Western Massachusetts area. From find venues, to organizing and running workshops for aspiring performers, Christina and her partners offer a multi-faceted resource for performers.

Christina will be releasing her second CD shortly. We sat down with Christina to talk about her music, her CD, and her involvement in promoting and nurturing performers in her patch of the American landscape.

Mercedes is a entrepreneur and a fresh food enthusiast. Mercedes is celebrating her first year anniversary of running her store, The Farm Market on Warren. Besides the challenges of running a start-up small business we talk about the growing movement of “eating fresh, eating local”. Mercedes sells produce, meats and dairy from local farms with an eye toward buying only from farms that demonstrate that they are good stewards of the land. The Farm Market on Warren serves a wide variety of people, and is a source for the many fine dining restaurants in the community. For Mercedes, the satisfaction she gets from providing fresh foods, and teaching people how to cook them and introducing them to new varieties more than compensates for 80+ hour work weeks.

Poet and writer Will Nixon sits down with This American Landscape to talk about the release of his second book of poems, “Love in the City of Grudges”. Gritty, mysterious, poignant, resurrection…. Love in the City of Grudges is all of these things. Nixon talks about the genesis of this collection, as well as his life as a copy editor, environmental journalist, and newspaper columnist. Nixon chats about the influence beat poet Gary Snyder had on his work and some of the other influences on his writing. Love in the City of Grudges is an intriguing read. The libertarian Dime – Episode 81 – Whose Katrina Is It?

This week it was just Shane and Jonathan, and without any sort of plan, ended up discussing for a while the recent BP spill. They talked about the libertarian approach to offshore drilling, which some people might be surprised to know isn’t about just letting BP dump oil into the Gulf. They discussed in depth a recent Rollingstone Magazine article that paints a pretty negative picture of both Bush and Obama, casting doubt that there was any real change in the MMS department despite tough talk. The BP spill might be Obama’s Katrina and worse. In addition, they talked about the ethics of euthanizing oil laden animals who even after cleaning, will have extremely low survival rates. Lastly, they talked about the upcoming skeptics conference, The Amaz!ng Meeting 8, July 8 – July 11, in Las Vegas.

The Dime – Episode 4 – UFO’s

Less a show about specific UFO cases, instead the trio talked about the world of UFOlogy including Dr Joe’s recent trip retracing the drive of Betty and Barney Hill and visiting Exeter, NH. They also talked about the US space program as well as the future of the country in the hands of the next generation.
