This American Landscape – Episode 3 – Community Newspapers

May 31st, 2010 by Shane

In an environment where daily newspapers are struggling to stay afloat, some community newspapers are growing. This week we talk with Parry Teasedale, editor and publisher of a fledgling community newspaper, The Columbia Paper. Parry discusses the special dynamics of community and community newspapers, the different role they fill, and the vested interests of community people who work to put out such a newspaper each week. The ingredients for success of this paper may well be a model for other community publications who work uphold the long traditions of the community newspaper. We think you will enjoy this insightful and surprising discussion on community newspapers.

The libertarian Dime – Episode 80 – Busting Unions

May 30th, 2010 by Shane

This week, The libertarian Dime turned it’s, well, libertarian eye, to unions. Shane and Jonathan, once again joined by Josh Brady, talked about how unions and their cozy relationship with government has done more damage than good lately. While acknowledging the accomplishments of the past and recognizing the right of workers to freely associate, the show focused mainly on those times when government and unions have teamed up, such as with public sector unions, teacher’s unions, and the quid pro quo’s that happen when unions donate lots of money to political campaigns. Also, they touched upon Rand Paul’s clueless remarks about the Civil Rights Act.

The libertarian Dime – Episode 80 – Busting Unions

May 27th, 2010 by Jonathan

On tonight’s episode, Shane and Jonathan will be discussing unions. From the automobile industry to the teamsters, we will be discussing how unions are not only detrimental to the free market, but also do not ultimately protect the workers. This has always been a hot issue in America since unionization began, and even more so now, given the recent bail-out of the automotive industry.

The libertarian Dime – Episode 79 – Immigration

May 27th, 2010 by Shane

This week Shane & Jonathan were joined by Josh Brady to discuss immigration. This is a hot-button issue in the media, and with practically everyone in this country, with cities boycotting each other, states trying to pass legislation that is stricter than federal guidelines toward immigration, and tension rising across the country because of this very polarizing issue. They talked about it from all sides, looked at the Arizona law, and even took a caller from Arizona for her perspective on the new law from the ground. The guys also touched upon “Draw Mohammad Day” and it’s impact on free speech.

The libertarian Dime – Episode 79 – Immigration

May 20th, 2010 by Jonathan
On tonight’s episode, Shane and Jonathan will tackle the topic of immigration. This is a hot-button issue in the media, and with practically everyone in this country, with cities boycotting each other, states trying to pass legislation that is stricter than federal guidelines toward immigration, and tension rising across the country because of this very polarizing issue.

We will take time to look at both sides of the issue, the repercussions of tightening or even closing our borders to people wanting to come into our country, and even look at how the free market might be able to straighten out the issue. No matter where you stand on the issue, you’ll definitely want to listen to tonight’s broadcast of The Libertarian Dime.

The libertarian Dime – Episode 78 – Drug Prohibition

May 16th, 2010 by Shane

This week Shane & Jonathan talked about the current US policy of drug prohibition. Looking at the cost in terms of time, money, and life, Shane & Jonathan emphatically made the case that the current situation makes no sense. While at time calling upon youthful escapades with alcohol, the goal was to show how a worse drug, alcohol, is used by even those who hardly partake. There is just no justification for the War on Drugs anymore, and everyone should listen to this show for that reason.

This American Landscape – Episode 2 – Mormons

May 15th, 2010 by Shane

This program explores the lives of two young missionaries from the Church of Later Day Saints. Their church doctrine is not discussed, but rather it’s a look at the day to day life of a Mormon missionary. Most people know them as the young people who come knocking on your door. But have you ever wondered what it’s like to spend two years in a very regimented life, facing rejection and hostility on a daily basis seven days a week for two years? We think you’ll be quite surprised at the attitude and outlooks of these two Mormon missionaries as we explore another portrait in This American Landscape.

The missionaries are Elder Hale and Elder McBride who are assigned to Columbia County, New York.
